Laurence Durieu’s paintings relate to domestic life and often more specifically to the family portrait. Using family photos as a point of departure, Durieu synchronizes different moments in the life of her family, to which she adds fictional elements to create her densely narrative tableaux. Her paintings depict the family as an eerie idyll amid the impending collapse of the world, an almost anachronistic configuration that continues to be performed despite being threatened by climate change and overconsumption. The works brim with art-historical references that further reinforce their anachronistic quality. Recent exhibitions include Ultima Cena at Gallery Rivoli C-APS, Brussels (2024); A Family Affair, C-APS, Oostende (2023); Open M, Museum M, Leuven (2022); Gaverprijs, CC De Schakel, Waregem (2022); and Ronse Drawing Prize, CC De Ververij, Ronse (2021). Born in 1972, Durieu lives and works in Meise, Belgium.
